There was false teaching and there were dangerous heresies in Paul's day, and there are in our day too. False teaching can be subtle and persuasive and those who are being influenced away from correct doctrine will likely not realize how they are drifting toward dangerous waters. The sheep need a shepherd to give clear warning and protect them from subtle wrong teaching.
